Uninspected private recreational vessels are chartered, leased, or rented to an individual (Charterer) through a written agreement. The Owner doesn’t provide a Master/Skipper or crew. Instead, the Charterer picks and hires a Skipper/crew that meets the owner’s and Coast Guard requirements. During the charter, the Charterer takes on the responsibility of operating the vessel according to federal and state maritime laws. They have full control and possession of the vessel as if it’s their own. While the Owner can suggest Skippers for hire, they can’t choose for the Charterer. The Owner may require the Charterer to hire a Master/Skipper with specific qualifications. The Master/Skipper should be well-versed in navigation, charts, compass, and onboard systems, along with extensive knowledge of local waterways and regulations. When booking, all Skipper details must be provided to ensure they meet the vessel’s driving requirements. Master/Skippers work as independent contractors for the Charterer based on mutual agreement. If needed, we’re happy to share a list of qualified skippers upon request.
